In the sixth century, Shakya and Koliya kings were powerful kings of Terai of western Nepal. Their origin has different kind of sayings. Kaushalraj Okkak neutralled his 4 sons and 5 daughters from his kingdom. They used to stay near a lake of lotus below the Himalayas. When minister was sent to get their information, they were found to be married with each other and stay. When king heard this, he yelled “Hey prince, you are Shakya, confirm Shakya.” Thus Shakya were formed. Their elder daughter’s children were called Koliya bamsha. According to Rama, when he suffered leprocy, he was cured by staying under Kola tree. So in order to cure leprocy, Priya, the princess stayed there after marriage. The place they used to stay were called Devdaha, Ramgram, Byaghrapur, Byaghpath, Kolgram and Koliya nagar.
Mayadevi and Prajapati were two daughters and Dandapani and Suprabuddha were two sons of Anjan of Koliya. Shakyabamshi Suddhodhan wedded Mayadevi and Prajapati. So, they had family relations. When Prajapati became monk, she had told “My father was anjan Shakya and mother was Sulakshyana. After my birth in Devdaha, I went to palace of king Suddhodhan.” There were 10 districts on west and 6 on east of Rohini. Ramgram and Devdaha belonged to Koliyas.
When Buddha was 80, Koliyas of Ramgram went and said “the lord is Kshatriya and so are we. After the great performance in Kushinagar, we have equal rights in the remains of Buddha.” There was a conflict in giving remains to Malla of Kushinagar, which was settled by priest Drona. The re,aims were divided to 8 parts and given each to Magadh, Baishali, Kapilvastu, Allakappa, Ramgram, Baidip pawa and Kushinagar. The mauryas of Piplivan came late, so Drona had taken their part. The mauryas established eight asthistupa, nineth tumba stupa and tenth Angara stupa. They collected all bone marrows from stupas and built a greater stupa. But, collection from Ramgram wasn’t possible due to the security of snakes. The bone marrows of Ramgram were flown away by Ganga river to the sea. The snakes searched that and preserved in Ramgram. Bacj then, small rivers were called Ganga. Samrat Ashok also couldn’t take the bone marrow from Ramgram while constructing eighty four thousand stupas. So Buddha religion and culture has great value of this place.
